Origin of the Symbols
According to ancient Chinese legends there are several stories as to the order of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Some say the animals were chosen because when the Buddha left the earth they were the animals that came to see him off. And that the order was decided by the order of their appearance.
However another story is that the twelve animals quarreled one day as to who was to head the cycle of years. They asked the gods to decide, and a contest was offered to resolve the problem. The contest was a race to see who could reach the opposite bank of the river would be first, and the rest of the animals would receive their years according to their finish.
As all the twelve animals gathered at the river bank, some of the animals were more creative than others in winning.
Unknown to the ox, the rat had jumped upon his back. As the ox was about to jump ashore, the rat jumped off the ox's back, and won the race. The pig, who was very lazy, ended up last. That is why the rat is the first year of the animal cycle, the ox second, and the pig last.
How the Chinese Zodiac Chart Came About
The rotating cycle of twelve animal signs was a folk method for naming the years in traditional China. The animal signs for one another in an established order, and are repeated every twelve years.
In traditional China, dating methods were repeated time after time according to a pattern. One of the most popular folk methods which reflected this cyclical method of recording years are the Twelve Animal Signs of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Every year is assigned an animal name or 'sign' in accordance to a repeating cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Boar. Therefore, every twelve years the same animal name or "sign" would reappear.
A cultural sidelight of the animal signs in Chinese folklore is that horoscopes have developed around the animal signs, These horoscopes are amusing, but are not regarded seriously by most Chinese people.
The animal signs can also serve a useful social function for finding out peoples ages without having to directly ask someone how old they are. In asking what is their animal sign you could with a bit of common sense, place that persons age within a cycle of 12 years. Hence figuring out their exact age.
